Tres retratos (pintura)

Three Portraits (painting) 1987, acrylic on paper (Gvarro), 140 x 300 centimeters (55 x 118 inches); a series of 12 pieces, each measuring 70 x 50 centimeters (27 ½ x 19 ¾ inches). Glexis Novoa Studio, Miami.

Through a series of self-portraits that hover between political questioning and the exaltation of identity, the work presents diverse permutations in technique and the use of the format. It moves between the hieratic nature of an authoritarian profile and the solemnity of a commemorative statue, suggesting a dialogue where the premises of art and life intertwine. It represents a kind of transition from the autocratic “strongman” to the “Caesar of our time”—a laureate figure now fading into history. Perhaps it is a version inspired by the indoctrination of the past that urged one to become “the new man.”
